Long term acute care (LTAC) hospitals are designed to care for patients with a critical injury or illness who require intensive, round-the-clock attention for an extended period of time.

Unlike general acute care hospitals, which focus on stabilizing a patient's medical condition, and nursing homes, which are not equipped to provide intensive medical care, LTACs specialize in providing both critical care and therapy services to patients with medically complex conditions.
